God is like gravity

“God is like gravity,” he said. “It’s always there, and you learn to work with it.”

These were the words uttered from my very wise and powerful rolfer a few sessions ago as he was briefing me on working with spirit. He always gives me homework and insight to take with me and keep his work moving forward in the body-space.

When I started making my drippy paintings, this is the line I thought about. I had been struggling to feel like spirit was present in my life at the time, and found that I had to open more space to let it in. I like to work on that in the studio, on the mat, and off the mat. (Off the mat is where it gets more slippery, especially between the hours of 9-5 in front of my glowing rectangle. But, that’s where I really learn to work with it.)

I wanted to share my prime inspiration for the drippy pieces – the ‘God is like Gravity’ series. It’s the album cover for Jonsi’s GO album that came out this spring. I fell in love instantly with the entire album, the art and all of Jonsi’s spirit. Needless to say, that album was on repeat for over 4 months at my place, and it was the first album I listened to when I started working on the drippy pieces.

I love the bold colors on the white, and the fluidity of the drips, as though they came from a heavily loaded brush of color. There is a vibrancy and an organicness that I get a little lost in. I could stare at this for hours, on repeat.
